What to Know Before Booking a Microdermabrasion Appointment
As one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, microdermabrasion is offered by almost all estheticians. But, what is microdermabrasion, and what benefits does it offer for your skin? The treatment helps a whole variety of skin concerns, from aging skin to acne and acne scars. The Esthy Clinic includes this procedure in many of our facial services.
What is microdermabrasion?
First off, microdermabrasion is a noninvasive treatment that can be performed by a licensed esthetician or dermatologist. There are several methods by which the procedure can be applied, and most usually involve a wand or applicator that gently exfoliates your skin.
Preparing for your appointment
Given the simplicity of a microdermabrasion appointment, there isn’t much you have to worry about as far as preparation. If it’s your first appointment with your esthetician, you’ll likely have a consultation to talk about your skin history and concerns. If acne is your first concern, you might be better off with an acne facial instead.
The one exception is if you’re using exfoliating creams or other prescriptions that sensitize the skin on your face. You’ll be asked to stop use of these for at least a week prior to your appointment. Your esthetician cleanses your face of any makeup and debris, so don’t worry about washing your face before the appointment.
Diamond tip microdermabrasion
At The Esthy Clinic, our microdermabrasion makes use of a diamond tip handpiece. Its design simultaneously exfoliates and suctions off dead skin cells. Light pressure is applied to your face with the handpiece to achieve the proper exfoliating depth. Old, dead skin cells are peeled away to reveal young, brand new skin.
After the microdermabrasion part of your appointment, your esthetician applies products to lock in benefits. Moisturizer is applied to infuse the new skin with vitamins and hydration. Then, sunscreen protects your skin from damaging sun rays and other debris you’ll encounter after you leave.
What to expect during your appointment
Due to the nature of the treatment, you’ll be seated in a reclining chair. Your esthetician will prepare your face with cleanser before starting the treatment. When the treatment begins, you feel a little bit of pressure from the handpiece, but no pain! The entire process, including preparation and product application usually takes around an hour.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
No matter what your skin concerns are, microdermabrasion likely benefits it. The best benefits are achieved by booking regular appointments every month or so. Overall, microdermabrasion aims to make your skin smoother, look younger, and more even.
Improve collagen production
A main benefit of this facial treatment is promoting collagen production. Collagen is an essential protein for providing structure in your skin. It is plentiful at a young age, but production slows as you age. More collagen means your skin looks younger, and appears more taut.
Other helpful benefits
Including microdermabrasion with other facial treatments has a wealth of benefits. In addition to collagen production, you can expect the procedure to have these perks:
Helps reduce hyperpigmentation
Addresses acne, and the discoloration and scarring acne leaves behind
Evens out fine lines and wrinkles
Helps even out stretch marks
Reduce signs of aging, such as age spots
Exfoliation brightens complexion
Taking care of your skin after the appointment
Every great esthetician educates clients both on the treatments they receive during an appointment, but also of the at home routine you should be following. Everyone’s skin is different, so it’ll never be a one size fits all recommendation. Your results amplify by sticking to the routine outlined by your esthetician, and coming back for your next appointment on time.
Side effects and downtime
As a noninvasive, cosmetic treatment, microdermabrasion has little to no downtime. Right after you walk out of your appointment, you will be able to go about your day! Unlike treatments such as chemical peels that leave your skin very vulnerable, microdermabrasion has few take home guidelines.
While it is true that your skin will be more susceptible to sun damage for a few days after an appointment, you should always be using sunscreen to protect your skin when you venture outside.
At home skin care routine
Per your esthetician’s guidance, use products to further rejuvenate and protect your skin. It’s important to keep your skin moisturized and hydrated on a daily basis to keep up a youthful appearance.
Night time cleansers may also be advocated in order to clear your pores of dirt, debris, and dead skin cells. As always, sunscreen also protects your skin from continuous damage. Many modern facial sunscreen formulas include other vitamins to strengthen your skin as it is protected.
